Andrea Electronics Demonstrates Digital Array Software at SAE

6 March 2000

Andrea Electronics Demonstrates Digital Array Software Technologies for the Automotive Industry at Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 2000 Show
Andrea to Promote Benefits of Embedded Digital Far-Field Microphone
                        Technologies for Auto Industry

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 6 Andrea Electronics Corporation
(Amex: AND) announced today that it is participating in the 2000 Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) show taking place in Detroit, Michigan on
March 6-9, 2000. At the SAE show, Andrea Electronics will demonstrate the
versatility of its digital microphone technologies in a variety of form
factors such as automotive interior mirrors and headliner consoles. These
far-field digital microphone array technologies, including patented Digital
Super Directional Array (DSDA(R)), PureAudio(TM) and SuperBeam(TM), perform
superior noise cancellation to achieve clear and accurate voice communications
and promote safety through a hands-free natural language interface in real
world noisy car environments. Key to integration in the automotive
environment, these digital audio input technologies can be scaled and embedded
into a wide range of hardware devices where audio processing can be performed
on a dedicated digital signal processor (DSP) or through a host processor in
remote locations within the vehicle.
Recently, Andrea Electronics and Donnelly Corporation , a
worldwide leading supplier of automotive mirrors, windows and other electronic
products, announced an agreement whereby Andrea Electronics will optimize its
digital, far-field audio input microphone technologies for Donnelly's line of
automotive mirror systems. Together at SAE, Donnelly and Andrea Electronics
will specifically demonstrate the benefits of Andrea Electronics' digital
audio input technologies when integrated into Donnelly's mirror products to
enable speech-driven applications and car communications through an accurate,
natural language interface.
"The automotive marketplace is clearly emerging as a hotbed for Internet
connected cars and the preferred user interface will be voice to obtain, send,
and receive information and communications," said Christopher P. Sauvigne,
President and Chief Operating Officer of Andrea Electronics Corporation. "Due
to an automobile's inherent noise environment, telematics applications will
require advanced noise cancellation technologies for proper operation.
Andrea's digital audio input technologies provide the solution to this
challenging need and based on our ability to embed and optimize our
technologies, we look forward to working with automobile manufacturers, system
integrators and other providers of wireless data connections to create
state-of-the-art car communication systems."
Automotive Industry Leaders Demonstrating Andrea Digital Software Products
The Andrea AutoArray(TM), a high performance, digital microphone system
designed to enhance the speech recognition interface for in-vehicle computing,
will also be used in demonstrations by the following leading automotive
technology developers and suppliers exhibiting at SAE including Clarion
Corporation of America, Delphi Automotive Systems, Intrepid Control Systems
and Microsoft Corporation.
The Andrea AutoArray is the first super-directional audio input device
designed specifically for Auto PCs, global positioning systems (GPS),
telematics systems and cellular car phone kits. Utilizing Andrea Electronics'
patented DSDA technology, the AutoArray produces optimum recognition results
over traditional directional microphones. Patented DSDA technology utilizes
multiple microphones, unique acoustic software algorithms and a digital signal
processor (DSP) to adaptively focus microphone sensitivity on the driver's
voice, thus reducing noise from other sources such as tire and road noise,
engine hum, traffic, passengers' conversations and music, to achieve clear
microphone performance never before possible in mobile applications.
The SAE is one of the most significant global automotive engineering
events addressing all technical and business disciplines and introducing
hundreds of new products from more than 1,100 global suppliers.
