WALKER RACING NOTEBOOK Walker Racing rookie standout Sarah Fisher gets quickly "Up to Speed" INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, March 1, 2000 --- Rookie Walker Racing driver Sarah Fisher in the Cummins Special/Riley & Scott/Oldsmobile/Firestone car, wasted little time besting the times of many veteran racers at the Northern Light Indy Racing Series "Test in the West" held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway during the week of Feb. 21 - 26. Fisher, who will make her first start for Walker Racing at the MCI WorldCom Indy 200 on March 19 at Phoenix, ended up seventh overall in the testing session at the 1-mile oval with a fastest speed of 170.810 mph and a time of 21.076 seconds. Fisher's best time was only 0.43 seconds behind the fastest test time, held by driver Stephan Gregoire. "Phoenix is an interesting track because you drive into turns one and two totally differently than you do in three and four. Turns three and four are easier because it's a consistent, smooth corner and you don't have to step off the gas pedal. It was a good experience for me." A good experience that is, until Sarah and the Turn Two wall met late in the second day of testing. "It was a rookie mistake. The tires weren't up to temperature, and I didn't give them enough time. I learned that I have to have more patience." Sarah, who at 19-years-old, is the youngest driver ever to race in the Indy Racing Series, had two very prestigious coaches assisting her at Phoenix. She spoke about some of the advice she received from the Indianapolis legends. "Before I drove my race car on the track, I spent some time in a rental car with (1998 Indianapolis 500 winner) Eddie Cheever Jr. and Al Unser Sr. (four-time "500" winner). They taught me some important things about racing at Phoenix, like staying low coming out of the pits, and some of the ins and outs and ways to approach the angles of the racetrack." One and Only The Walker Racing team is the ONLY open-wheel team to compete full-time in both the Indy Racing League Series (with Sarah Fisher) and the CART series (with Shinji Nakano). ***** Walker Racing CART program Walker Racing will be campaigning rookie driver Shinji Nakano in the CART FedEx Championship Series during the 2000 season. Nakano, a veteran of the Formula One racing ranks, tested for the first time at CART Spring Training in Homestead, Fla. at the beginning of February in the Walker Racing #5 Avex/Mitsuba/Alpine/Reynard/Honda/Firestone. Although it was Shinji's first time ever on an oval track, he posted a fastest speed of 199.874 mph on the 1.5-mile oval racetrack. "The biggest difference for me between Formula One and the CART series is learning the oval tracks. Homestead is the first oval I've been on and I feel to do well in the CART series, you will need a lot of experience on ovals." We'd like to thank our Sponsors Walker Racing's IRL corporate sponsor partners are Cummins Engine Company and Mead Paper Co.
