PRESS RELEASE March 2,2000 To see the dramatic Pictures visit: http://www.thanksal.com/raceteam/article.html Boenker Racing Accident Changes Formula Mazda Design Fort Worth, Texas: After a dramatic accident involving team driver Steve Cook of Al Boenker Racing, the team launched a public relations campaign that forced change in the design of the Formula Mazda cars. It was a hard accident to watch, said team owner and driver Al Boenker, Steve came out with no major injuries...even though his roll bar gave way. We knew there had to be a change in the roll bar before we would continue to race, said lead driver Quad Boenker. We told the series we would not race until a change was made to protect the drivers. Hours after the accident, we were on the phone, e-mailing photos, sending letters, and talking with series management. The series quickly made a modification in the design of the roll bar that offers more support for the bar and more protection for the driver. Fortunately, I sit very low in the car, said driver Steve Cook. Had I been sitting an inch or two higher I may not be here to talk about it. Overall, the various Formula Mazda series have had few incidents. The car is designed very well, said Quad Boenker. However, we want to minimize as many risks as possible. Team Boenker will be racing April 1st at Charlotte Speedway. The team is expected to repeat their Southwest Formula Mazda Championship in 2000, and perform well in the Pro Star Formula Mazda Series.
