GM Truck Sales Continue Upswing; Records Set in All Truck Segments

* Best February Since 1988
DETROIT, March 1 -- General Motors today reported
a 16% increase in sales for the month of February led by record truck sales.
Truck sales rose 20% to 227,298 units, marking the third straight month of
double-digit truck sales growth, and a record February for GM trucks overall.
Consumer demand for GM's portfolio of trucks remains strong after posting a
record performance in 1999 and capturing industry truck leadership for the
second half of the year.
"GM is looking for another strong sales year for the industry, and this
was our best February since 1988. Our gains are being led by industry-leading
performance of our truck lineup," said Bill Lovejoy, Group Vice President of
GM North America Vehicle, Sales, Service and Marketing. "Consumers continue
to demand trucks and we are putting the right mix of products in the market to
meet this demand."
For the month, GM broke all-time February sales records in all truck
segments -- pickups, utilities and vans. For example, sales of GM utility
vehicles rose 33% in February and spurred significant growth in total truck
sales for the month. GM Utilities also achieved a third-straight month of
double-digit growth. All of GM's small- and medium utilities -- Chevrolet
Tracker and Blazer; GMC Jimmy; and Oldsmobile Bravada -- posted best-ever
February sales. Full-size utility sales, which rose 16%, also had a best-ever
February, fueled by brisk sales of the all-new Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe,
and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Cadillac Escalade sales rose 68% with deliveries
of 2,723 units.
GM boosted full-size pickup sales 21% in February, marking the eighth
consecutive month of double-digit growth in total and retail full-size GM
pickup sales. The industry-leading Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1/2-ton
pickups achieved February records in their market segment -- the industry's
second-largest vehicle segment.
Retail GM truck sales climbed 22%, marking the third consecutive month of
double-digit growth and accounting for 53% of total retail sales.
Total GM vehicle sales rose 16% to 470,805 units in February and total GM
retail sales climbed 17%.
GM sold 243,507 cars in February, up 12%. These gains were led once again
by mid-size cars -- the industry's largest segment and GM's strongest -- the
company boosted sales 22%. GM has 13 entries in the competitive mid-size
segment and February sales included strong showings by: Chevrolet Monte Carlo
(up 51%); Chevrolet Malibu (up 33%); Buick Century (up 18%), Oldsmobile Alero
(up 14%); and Pontiac Grand Am (up 14%).
GM luxury car sales rose 15%. Sales of the Cadillac Deville -- America's
best-selling luxury car for the past 14 years -- soared 40%, the Buick Park
Avenue climbed 19%, and the Saab 9-5 was up 16%.
