Toyota Reports Best-Ever February SalesTORRANCE, Calif., March 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever February sales of 127,858 vehicles, up 13.5 percent over the same period last year. "First-quarter industry sales continue to out-pace expectations, but the hot market is showing signs of a cool-down," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice-president. "The recent rise in both interest rates and gasoline prices has already softened consumer confidence and may well slow-down the pace of consumer spending." Both TMS sales divisions recorded best-ever February sales. The Toyota Division posted best-ever February sales of 113,032, up 15.4 percent. The Lexus Division enjoyed best-ever February sales of 14,826 vehicles, an increase of 0.8 percent over the same period last year. Toyota passenger cars enjoyed best-ever February sales of 70,673, an increase of 14.1 percent. The redesigned Avalon, launched last October, recorded its best-ever sales month with 9,024 units, an increase of 83.7 percent over the same period last year. The seventh-generation Celica, launched in October, recorded strong sales of 4,252 units. Toyota's all-new ECHO sub-compact had its best sales month since its October launch with 4,179 units sold. Toyota Division light trucks recorded a best-ever February with total sales of 42,359, up 17.6 percent. The Sienna minivan led the light truck charge with best-ever February sales of 8,454 units, up 14.3 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup continued to rack up strong sales with 7,696 units sold while the Land Cruiser sport utility vehicle (SUV) posted its best-ever February with 1,473 sales, an increase of 2.9 percent. The Lexus Division's record-breaking February sales were sparked by its popular RX 300 SUV with best-ever February sales of 6,826, an increase of 24.9 percent. The LX 470 also recorded a best-ever February with 1,368 sales, up 6.9 percent. Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 61.0 percent of total February sales. There were 25 selling days in February compared to 24 last year.
