Toyota Reports Best-Ever February Sales

Toyota Reports Best-Ever February Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., March 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS),
U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever February sales of 127,858 vehicles, up
13.5 percent over the same period last year.
"First-quarter industry sales continue to out-pace expectations, but the
hot market is showing signs of a cool-down," said Jim Press, TMS executive
vice-president. "The recent rise in both interest rates and gasoline prices
has already softened consumer confidence and may well slow-down the pace of
consumer spending."
Both TMS sales divisions recorded best-ever February sales. The Toyota
Division posted best-ever February sales of 113,032, up 15.4 percent. The
Lexus Division enjoyed best-ever February sales of 14,826 vehicles, an
increase of 0.8 percent over the same period last year.
Toyota passenger cars enjoyed best-ever February sales of 70,673, an
increase of 14.1 percent. The redesigned Avalon, launched last October,
recorded its best-ever sales month with 9,024 units, an increase of
83.7 percent over the same period last year. The seventh-generation Celica,
launched in October, recorded strong sales of 4,252 units. Toyota's all-new
ECHO sub-compact had its best sales month since its October launch with
4,179 units sold.
Toyota Division light trucks recorded a best-ever February with total
sales of 42,359, up 17.6 percent. The Sienna minivan led the light truck
charge with best-ever February sales of 8,454 units, up 14.3 percent. The
Tundra full-size pickup continued to rack up strong sales with 7,696 units
sold while the Land Cruiser sport utility vehicle (SUV) posted its best-ever
February with 1,473 sales, an increase of 2.9 percent.
The Lexus Division's record-breaking February sales were sparked by its
popular RX 300 SUV with best-ever February sales of 6,826, an increase of
24.9 percent. The LX 470 also recorded a best-ever February with 1,368 sales,
up 6.9 percent.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 61.0 percent of total
February sales. There were 25 selling days in February compared to 24 last
year.
