Hawaii's Making Waves in WESTWAYS; Magazine Highlights ``Rearview Mirror'' Exhibit in Riverside
LOS ANGELES--March 1, 2000--Survey; and Cutting Taxes
WESTWAYS magazine's March/April issue features an essay by hula instructor Rita Ariyoshi about the enduring appeal of ancient and modern hula dances.
Ariyoshi, author of Hula is Life, also explains the legends and tales hula depicts. The feature also lists major hula events held throughout the year in Hawaii and hula activities in the Southland, including in Wilmington, Lawndale, Redondo Beach and Orange.
Automotive writer Peter Bohr helps motorists take their vehicles' "pulse" with a 10-minute car inspection that can help avert a costly and possibly dangerous breakdown. Nearly three-quarters of the Auto Club's roadside assistance calls involve problems that could be avoided if the cars' owners had done preventive maintenance. In a separate and new feature, Bohr shares the results of WESTWAYS' first-ever vehicle owner survey that explores differences among the Accord, Camry and Taurus. The survey compares reliability, dealer service, and owner satisfaction.
It's that time of year. WESTWAYS personal finance columnist Daniel Akst describes ways to lower your income taxes by offering suggestions for developing a year-round awareness of tax consequences of financial decisions.
The Automobile Club of Southern California and the UCR/California Museum of Photography, in a joint collaboration, bring together some of the most famous photographs of the 20th Century looking at cars and American culture. The new exhibit explores how Americans have defined themselves through automobiles and vice versa. WESTWAYS readers get a preview first in this issue.
The 150 photographs in the show include Margaret Bourke-White's, "In the Time of the Louisville Flood 1937" and untitled aerial photographs of Los Angeles freeways by Ansel Adams. Images by Ed Ruscha, Edward Steichen, and the beat generation's Allen Ginsberg are also included in this unique show. Actor Dennis Hopper contributed one of his works to the show as well.
The exhibit will open on Saturday, April 8, and continue through Aug. 13, 2000, at one of the world's most foremost photography museums, UCR/California Museum of Photography in Riverside, Calif.
The Auto Club has underwritten six episodes of "Road Trip" with Huell Howser, a new public television series. Howser shares each "Road Trip" with WESTWAYS readers in a column by the same name.
Howser's destination in this issue is Fillmore, with a stop in tiny Piru, which can be reached from going north on I-5 out of Los Angeles and west off Highway 26. Piru and Fillmore take readers back to when California was a slower, kinder and gentler place.
The March/April WESTWAYS also spotlights the best Southland breakfasts, a comedy club and offers how-to consumer tips:
