Delphi High-Tech Products Featured on Cadillac 2000 Imaj Concept VehicleGENEVA, Switzerland, March 1 -- Delphi Automotive Systems products are showcased on the 2000 Cadillac Imaj concept vehicle, which makes its public debut here tomorrow at the Geneva Auto Show. Featured on the concept vehicle are Delphi's MagneRide(TM) suspension control technology, Eyecue(R) Head-Up Display (HUD), Forewarn(R) Collision Avoidance, advanced reception system and Communiport(R) Infotainment system. "These revolutionary technologies were designed to meet the growing consumer demand for safety and convenience while travelling," said Jeffrey J. Owens, general director of Engineering for Delphi Delco Electronics Systems. "The Imaj is a peek at future features and technologies offered to the drivers of luxury cars." For the 2000 Imaj, Delphi and Cadillac feature MagneRide suspension control technology. MagneRide, which represents the next level of Cadillac's highly acclaimed integrated chassis system, is the industry's most advanced variable damping technology and one of the links to complete vehicle chassis integration. Highlights of the MagneRide system include: * Revolutionary performance -- MagneRide brings variable damping to high-performance levels currently unmatched in the industry. It helps overcome the traditional tradeoffs between ride and handling by delivering increased maximum damping forces with lightning-quick response. It also delivers ultra-quiet operation in a durable, cost-effective package. * Magneto-rheological fluid -- MagneRide represents the industry's first commercially available application of MR fluid in a variable damping system. The fluid enables valve-less dampers and damping level adjustments of up to 1,000 times per second. * Unified chassis control -- MagneRide is the industry's first valveless variable damping system that can be electronically linked with other vehicle chassis controls. Delphi also has worked with Cadillac in introducing the Communiport Infotainment PC system on the Imaj, further reinforcing Cadillac's position as a leader in Infotainment technology. Communiport, which offers custom-designed integrated entertainment and communications options, further enhances driver and passenger convenience. Highlights of the Communiport brand Mobile MultiMedia Systems featured on the 2000 Imaj include: * Navigation -- The Infotainment PC allows drivers to select a destination and receive a color map-based navigation system with turn-by-turn instructions. * Voice recognition -- Occupants can activate the functions through voice command, so they can keep their "hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road," an important safety design feature to Delphi and to Cadillac. * Text-to-speech -- E-mail messages can be read back to occupants. * Voice memo -- Voice messages may be recorded, stored and played back at a later time. * Infrared port -- This function allows handheld devices such as portable phones and personal data assistants to exchange information. * CD/CD-ROM drive -- Plays music CD's and reads CD-ROM databases such as maps. * Compact flash slot -- Allows for expanded memory and software upgrades. * Cell phone integration unit -- Docks a portable cell phone and allows cell phone control via voice recognition or front panel keypad. Delphi's Eyecue(R), originally developed for military applications, uses the concept vehicle's windshield as an optical element to project an image. The image, which appears to float in the air near the front edge of the hood, can display speed, turn signals, safety belt and high-beam reminder, vehicle status data, as well as cell phone, message and navigation information. Drivers can glance at the image without refocusing or moving their eyes from the road. The vehicle also features Forewarn(R) brand Collision Avoidance. The ultimate Forewarn goal is to provide an "electronic cocoon" around the vehicle perimeter when all of the Forewarn technologies become available. Highlights of Forewarn Collision Avoidance include: * Forewarn Adaptive Cruise Control -- Using a laser or a radar sensor mounted in the front of the vehicle, ACC detects vehicles ahead and automatically maintains a driver selectable gap. * Forewarn Blind Spot Warning -- This collision warning system is designed to enhance drivers' awareness of "blind spots" during lane changes. Sensors integrated into the vehicle's side-view mirrors recognize objects in detection zones and trigger visual and/or audio driver alerts. * Forewarn Back-Up Aid -- Back-up aid systems use radar and/or ultrasonic sensors mounted in the rear bumper area to help detect objects behind a vehicle and help drivers avoid backing into objects such as other vehicles, signs or bicycles. Delphi's Fuba advanced reception system provides for the multi-band reception capability desired in today's mobile environment. Within the advanced composite trunk lid design, the structure supports AM/FM, GPS and cellular phone reception. The system can be modified to adapt to the differing cell phone frequency requirements around the world. In addition, it can easily be updated to include worldwide television reception and it supports the reception needs of markets with digital audio broadcast (DAB) and satellite radio broadcasting.
