Exide Receives `Spirit of NAPA Award'
              Award Recognizes Product Quality, Customer Service

    READING, Pa., Feb. 28 -- Exide Corporation , the
global leader in the lead-acid battery business, announced today it has
received the "Spirit of NAPA Award" from the National Automotive Parts
Association.
    The award was presented by Steve Handschuh, President of NAPA, at the
Genuine Parts Company annual meeting.  In announcing the award, Handschuh
said, "Exide has an excellent sales team, great products, and they have earned
the respect of the entire NAPA organization."
    The award is presented each year to the supplier who exhibits outstanding
vendor support and service to 69 NAPA Distribution Centers and over 6,000 NAPA
Auto Parts stores.
    The judging considers:

    -- Shipping performance.
    -- Product quality.
    -- Local sales and marketing support.
    -- Technical information and clinic support.
    -- Overall merchandising of the product line.

    Accepting the award for Exide were Robert A. Lutz, Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer; Alan C. Johnson, President and Chief Operating Officer and
Steve Schwan, Vice President of marketing and sales in Exide's NAPA division.

industry and providing outstanding support to our customers," Lutz said.
