UAW Reaches Tentative Agreement With American Axle & Manufacturing on New Contract
DETROIT, Feb. 26 -- UAW President Stephen P. Yokich and Vice
President Richard Shoemaker, announced this evening that the UAW-American Axle
bargaining team reached tentative agreement on a new contract for 7,500 UAW
members at American Axle & Manufacturing, Inc. (AAM) locations in Detroit,
Hamtramck and Three Rivers, Michigan; and Buffalo, Tonawanda and Cheektowaga,
New York.
"We're pleased to announce this tentative new agreement for our members at
American Axle & Manufacturing," Yokich stated.
"UAW staff from the International and regions worked together with the
UAW-American Axle Bargaining Committee to craft this new agreement which was
achieved in advance of the expiration of the previous agreement, without any
disruption in production," Yokich continued.
"UAW members at American Axle are understandably proud that their efforts
have helped this company to become very successful," Shoemaker noted.
"This tentative new agreement recognizes their efforts and I am confident
that our UAW members at AAM will view this tentative agreement very
favourably," Shoemaker said.
Shoemaker, who directs the UAW General Motors Department, led the UAW
bargaining team at American Axle & Manufacturing negotiations in this round of
negotiations, and in reaching the initial contract agreement at AAM in 1997.
Details on the new agreement are being withheld pending informational
meetings of the UAW membership, which are set for early next week.
