SAE World Congress Will Feature Latest Intelligent Vehicle Technology to Improve Automotive Lifestyles and Safety
WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 24 -- From tiny video cameras to watch
blind spots to satellite receivers that carry 100 channels of music, news,
sports and entertainment, SAE World Congress will demonstrate the latest
intelligent vehicle devices to improve safety and making driving a car more
comfortable and entertaining.
Eight firms that are developing products for the intelligent vehicle
market will display their technology in an interactive atmosphere at Booth 435
at the SAE 2000 World Congress from March 6-9 at Cobo Center in Detroit,
Michigan.
Companies participating in the booth do not have names that are familiar
to the average car buyer. However, the technology they are developing could
be on automobiles in the near future.
Take ALIRT for example. The small Canadian firm has developed a tiny,
battery-powered TV camera that is mounted on the side-view mirror. The camera
provides the driver with a comprehensive look at left lane blind spots and
triggers an alarm if objects enter the danger zone.
Sirius Satellite Radio has announced an agreement with DaimlerChrysler to
provide satellite radio for DaimlerChrysler vehicles in the U.S. beginning
next year. Sirius will show how its receivers can pipe up to 100 channels of
commercial-free programming into Daimler/Chrysler vehicles. The channels will
include such sources as CNBC, National Public Radio, USA Networks, Bloomberg,
the BBC, and the nationally acclaimed "Car Talk."
Other intelligent vehicle companies participating in the Intelligent
Vehicle Pavilion include Prospects Corporation, who make SmartWindow sensors;
SRI International, who are developing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems,
Clarion, showing an in-vehicle entertainment, navigation, information
management, telematics and wireless communications center; TEMIC, who have a
speech recognition system for hands-free telephone; and Smartmove, who will
display the capability of the GSM network.
In addition to the exhibits, SAE is featuring a special panel on "The
Future of Telematics in the Automotive Industry." A panel of seven industry
experts will discuss the future of the industry and what devices consumers
might expect to see in automobiles in the near future. The panel,
co-sponsored by the German automotive society VDI, will take place at 9 a.m.
on Monday March 6 in Cobo Center.
