Con-Way Central Express Opens First Service Center Near Headquarters City, Ann Arbor, Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--Feb. 24, 2000--Con-Way Central Express (CCX), an Ann Arbor-based regional less-than-truckload freight carrier, recently opened a new freight service center at 5070 Carpenter Road, just north of US-12 in Ypsilanti, MI.CCX, a component company of Con-Way Transportation Services (CON-WAY), leased the five-acre site and started operations on February 7. The company's headquarters has been in nearby Ann Arbor since 1983 but the Ypsilanti center is the first operating service facility here. Local customers were previously served by the company's Detroit and Jackson, MI facilities.
The site's existing 4,500 square-foot structure has been refurbished to include 3,520 square feet of docking area with 18 doors and approximately 1,000 feet of office space. The new service center has 20 employees who will move an estimated 250,000 pounds of freight daily.
"This facility is really an outgrowth of our Detroit and Jackson service centers," said Richard V. Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of CCX. "The most important aspect is that having a facility in Ann Arbor increases the service level to our constantly growing customer base in Washtenaw county," he added.
Customers served are primarily in Ann Arbor, Saline, Hamburg, Milan, Ypsilanti and Whitmore Lake. Next-day service from the facility covers all of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, most of Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, and parts of Canada, New York, West Virginia, Iowa and Knoxville, TN.
Phil Kostoff, a CCX veteran, is the manager of the new facility. He started with CCX in 1992 and was promoted to account executive in 1993 and to service center manager in 1994. Most recently he was manager of CCX's Saginaw, MI service center.
