Women’s Board Continues to Educate and Recruit

The Speaker’s Bureau, Virtual Mentoring Web Site and membership were on the
minds of attendees at the last Car Care Council Women’s Board (WB) meeting,
which was hosted by Lyn St. James (St. James Enterprises), and David Piper
(Allison Transmissions) in Indianapolis, IN. The Board enjoyed a tour of the
Kenny Brown Racing facilities.

The Speaker’s Bureau is considered an important component in the Board’s
mission to educate women about automotive maintenance and careers.
Technology will play a key role as the list of speakers, statistics,
speaking tips, speeches and appropriate handouts become available on the
Council’s web site. Available speakers will be listed by their location,
specialty and cost. A percentage for the WB will be included in speaking
fees to cover the cost of the program.

The Board’s new mentoring site was unveiled. It reveals to young people the
myriad of opportunities in the automotive industry, encouraging them to
consider it as a career choice. Biographies and career paths written by
those in the automotive business help educate viewers about working in the
industry. Everyone is encouraged to fill out a brief bio and career path
form and become part of this unique educational tool.

Methods to increase memberships were discussed. Each Board member will try
to recruit six new members for 2000. The nomination letters have been an
effective tool. WB business cards featuring a "referred by" section have
been printed to aid in the recruiting effort.

In new business St. James encouraged members to think of ways the WB could
tie its message with women’s "awareness" months such as Breast Cancer
(October), Ovarian Cancer (September), and Women’s Health (May).

Jennifer Tio (Maximum Marketing) suggested the Board create a publication
for AAIW with articles and tips on recruiting women for the automotive
industry. Advertising could be sold in this piece.

The next WB meeting will be held at Automotive Aftermarket Industry
Association (AAIA) headquartered in Bethesda, MD, April 12, 2000. Both men
and women in the industry are encouraged join the Board, attend the meetings
and bring prospective members. If you would like to attend this meeting,
please call Donna Wagner at 1-800-466-5343 for more information.
