Mack 1999 Sales Reach a Record $3.18 Billion

LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa.--Feb. 22, 2000--Mack Trucks, Inc. today announced that it contributed $204 million to the 1999 operating profit of the Renault V.I./Mack Group, up from $105 million in 1998.
The contribution came on record net sales of $3.18 billion, up from $2.77 billion in 1998.
"With record sales and seven straight years of market share growth, Mack is as strong as it's been in our 100-year history," said Mack President and CEO Michel Gigou. "As we celebrate our Centennial anniversary, we're making major investments in our future, and we look forward to our second century of industry leadership."
Mack closed 1999 with a record 34,264 U.S. Class 8 retail sales, which represented 13.1 percent of the heavy truck market. This was an increase from 12.8 percent in 1998, making Mack the only U.S. Class 8 truck manufacturer to consistently increase its market share over the last seven years.
The U.S. truck market had its second straight record year in 1999, with the total retail volume increasing 25 percent, to 262,316 vehicles. Mack's sales growth outpaced the industry's -- retailing 7,463 more vehicles than in 1998, the company increased its volume by nearly 28 percent. Mack also strengthened its position as the industry's number three brand.
Mack's Canadian subsidiary, Mack Canada, Inc., experienced a slight drop in sales, to 2,858 units. This represented a 9.3 percent share of the Canadian retail market, compared to 10 percent in 1998. The company's major overseas subsidiary, Mack Trucks Australia Pty. Ltd., increased sales by 6 percent to 746 units, which represented a 12.1 percent share of the Australian heavy-duty truck market. This compared to 11.7 percent in 1998, and was buoyed by the introduction of five new truck models during the year.
Mack's total vehicle production was up 18.7 percent, to 39,028 vehicles. Year-end employment increased 8.7 percent to 6,216. At Mack's Macungie (PA) Assembly Operations, production increased 23.4 percent, to 16,171 vehicles. At the Winnsboro (SC) Assembly Operations, production increased 22.3 percent, to 21,997 vehicles. At the Hagerstown (MD) Powertrain Operations, engine production increased 13.4 percent to 46,627 units.
