BEI Technologies Marks Shipment Of One Millionth Gyro Chip Yaw Rate Sensor

18 February 2000

Systron Donner Inertial Division of BEI Technologies, Inc. Marks Shipment Of One Millionth Gyro Chip Yaw Rate Sensor
CONCORD, Calif., Feb. 18 -- BEI Technologies, Inc.
has recorded the shipment of the one-millionth GyroChip(R) yaw
rate sensor from its Systron Donner Inertial Division here. According to
Gerald D. Brasuell, vice president and general manager of the BEI division,
"The enthusiastic acceptance of these remarkable devices by the auto industry
has helped us achieve this production milestone in a relatively short time.
We welcome this opportunity to demonstrate this technical and commercial
breakthrough with an extremely high tech product that was originally conceived
for military and aerospace uses."
Brasuell continued, "Production of this patented micromachined (MEMS)
sensor for automotive stability control systems was launched by the Systron
Donner Inertial Division in the second half of 1996 when it was first
delivered for Cadillac's StabiliTrak(TM) system. Other automotive customers
were added in 1997, and the Company has quickly become the world's leading
supplier of yaw rate sensors for automotive stability control systems."
"In addition to Cadillac, the Company today delivers yaw sensors for Audi,
BMW, Buick, Corvette, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercedes Benz, Oldsmobile, Pontiac,
Volkswagen and Volvo." Additional brands and models will be added this year.
The BEI GyroChips are used in the latest generation of automotive
stability control systems. In these systems, sophisticated sensors provide
vital motion information to the car's on-board microprocessor to instantly
assure the vehicle's response to the driver's steering intentions on ice, snow
or other hazardous roads. Through selective and automatic braking on
individual wheels, these systems can compensate for oversteer or understeer
conditions.
Brasuell concluded: "Our goal is to achieve continuous process
improvements to reduce sensor size and cost without sacrificing performance.
We take great pride in our zero-defect quality record, and we will seek to
preserve that record as we reach for the two million unit mark this year."
