Con-Way Integrated Services Secures Multi-year Logistics Contract With Safelite Glass Corporation

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--Feb. 15, 2000--Con-Way Integrated Services (CIS) today announced a multi-year logistics contract with Safelite Glass Corporation, an aftermarket manufacturer, distributor and retailer of automotive glass.
CIS, a component company of Con-Way Transportation Services (CON-WAY), will handle all Safelite's less-than-truckload (LTL) and local transportation management needs from the CIS Supply Chain Management Center, which is located at its headquarters in Chicago, IL. Safelite supplies replacement glass to more than 500 retail locations from the company's U.S. manufacturing plants in Enfield, NC and Wichita, KS, two distribution centers and 79 warehouses. Safelite is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.
"CIS people and technology will provide Safelite a single point of contact for all transportation management and optimization, LTL carrier dispatching, in-transit shipment visibility and collection of critical shipment data we require for proper cost allocation by region and division to internal Safelite customers. Data capture was a high priority for us and CIS met our performance criteria in this area in addition to all our other requirements," said Doug Yaw, Safelite logistics manager.
"Safelite's special requirements and our systems are an ideal match, " said Mike Bare, vice-president and general manager of CIS. "We have been working with Safelite since early 1999 managing the LTL business previously coordinated by our sister company, Con-Way Truckload Services. With our new responsibilities now including all of Safelite's daily LTL and local cartage logistics, we will be able to apply our resources in a custom designed program for them. We anticipate managing over 19,000 Safelite shipments annually." Con-Way Truckload Services will continue to handle the bulk of Safelite's routed truckload shipments.
CIS offers multi-client warehousing; warehouse management; transportation optimization along with full transportation management; in-transit visibility; and order fulfillment. Value added services include network design, inventory management and supplier compliance, as well as postponement, light assembly, pick and pack, kitting and packaging. Created in 1998, the company deploys a unique approach to solving logistics challenges through a nationwide "shared network" of integrated systems and services. The company's supply chain management center coordinates the various enabling technologies to provide clients with an enterprise-wide view and a single point of contact utilizing the Internet, electronic data interchange (EDI), e-mail and fax for clients entrusting their inventory and shipments to CIS. CIS has a network of shared-client warehouses throughout the United States and plans to add four or five more warehouses in 2000.
