    TOPIC: Orders for industrial robots surged 20 percent in 1999, pushed largely by American automakers, the Financial Times reported. According to the United Nations Economic Commission and the International Federation of Robotics, American automakers ordered 60 percent more robots in 1999. The surge in robot use in integrated manufacturing systems follows a relative drop in robot prices.
