Unique Mobility Introduces Controller Area Network Option On Its Product Line
GOLDEN, Colo., Feb. 14 -- Unique Mobility, Inc. (Amex: UQM)
announced today that it is now offering a Controller Area Network ("CAN")
option on its product line of motors and motor controllers.
Vehicles contain an increasing number of on-board intelligent electronic
and electronically actuated components such as power windows, locks, seats,
brakes, seat heaters, music and phone systems and global positioning devices.
Advanced vehicles are adding to the list electric, hybrid electric and fuel
cell electric propulsion systems as well as electric power steering and
electric air conditioning. The variety and complexity of these devices has
led the automotive industry to develop a standard protocol for communication
to and between these components, i.e. CAN. All electronic component suppliers
are developing their future products to be CAN compatible.
CAN is a cost effective two-wire serial communication system for real-time
control applications which can replace expensive, heavy and cumbersome wiring
looms. Unique has developed a proprietary, Java-based software tool set to
aid in the development and analysis of CAN based components. These tools
allow the graphical visualization of the content of messages (i.e. speed,
torque, power) sent to and between these components. In addition, Unique
systems, when connected to a computer network, can be controlled, monitored
and updated over the Internet. The car, truck, bus, and off-highway
industries, plus the military, intend to use CAN for an increasing number of
applications.
"The car is becoming a network on wheels," said William G. Rankin,
Unique's President and CEO. "We are at the leading edge of software control
and networking technology and are increasing the value and utility of our
power dense and efficient motor/controller products by making them network
compatible. By adopting the CAN standard, our digitally controlled traction
drives, generators, fuel cell and air conditioning compressor motors and other
auxiliary power systems can be easily integrated by our customers and improve
the reliability and reduce the cost of their end products."
Unique Mobility, Inc. is a leading developer and manufacturer of power
dense, high efficiency motors, gear assemblies and electronic assemblies for
