GEICO Announces New Officer PromotionsWASHINGTON, Feb. 9 -- The GEICO companies today announced five new officer appointments, naming Bill Roberts executive vice president, Chuck Davies senior vice president, David Schindler senior vice president, Tom Wells senior vice president and chief financial officer, and Mary Zarcone assistant vice president of Region I underwriting. Roberts has served as senior vice president of GEICO's four insurance companies with responsibility for marketing, underwriting and pricing for each of these companies since 1997. He joined GEICO in 1984, and served as vice president of marketing, assistant vice president for underwriting in Region III, and group vice president. Roberts earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. "Having served GEICO for nearly a generation, Bill brings wisdom grounded in experience, expertise and enthusiasm for our missions," said CEO Tony Nicely. "He is uniquely qualified to help lead GEICO through future expansion and growth." Davies served as group vice president and general counsel for GEICO's four insurance companies since December 1998. From 1992 to 1998, he was vice president and general counsel. Davies began his career at GEICO in 1968 and held positions of increasing responsibility in the office of the general counsel. He was appointed vice president and deputy general counsel in 1987. He received his J.D. degree in 1967 from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. "Chuck has done an outstanding job for us as group vice president and general counsel," Nicely said. "He is a capable and competent leader in this critical arena." Schindler became group vice president of GEICO's four companies in 1995, with responsibility for GEICO's human resources, staff development and communications functions as well as the office of quality administration. Since joining GEICO in 1970, Schindler has served in a variety of positions, including claim manager, claim director, assistant vice president of a regional claim department, human resources vice president and regional vice president. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from The American University in Washington, D.C. "David brings 30 years of experience in a variety of roles to this position," said Nicely. "His breadth of experience has served GEICO well in the past, and will continue to do so." Wells has been group vice president and controller for GEICO Corporation since August 1992. He assumes chief financial officer responsibilities upon Al Sparks' retirement. Wells joined GEICO in 1980 as director of corporate financial reporting. One year later, he was appointed associate controller. Before joining GEICO, Wells was an audit manager with Ernst and Whinney, Washington, D.C. "Tom has a proven track record of excellence with the company," said Nicely. "His financial expertise and leadership will be invaluable to our future." Zarcone has served as Region II's service director since 1996. She started as a sales and service counselor at GEICO's New York office in 1972, moved to claims in 1975 and advanced to continuing unit examiner. She then supervised Region II's direct handling unit, and was promoted to manager of that unit in 1988 and continuing unit manager in 1992. She became director of residual market underwriting in 1995. Zarcone graduated with a BA in business management from Long Island University. "Mary will have a lot to offer Region I as it continues to grow," said Robert Miller, regional vice president.
