Governor's Highway Safety Commission to Meet
    WHAT:   GOVERNOR'S HIGHWAY SAFETY COMMISSION MEETING
    WHEN:   9 A.M. TO 3 P.M. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9
    WHERE:  RIVERSIDE HILTON, 301 N. WATER ST., WILMINGTON

    RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 7 -- The Governor's Highway Safety
Commission will hold its first quarterly meeting of 2000 on Wednesday,
February 9, at the Riverside Hilton in Wilmington.  The meeting was originally
scheduled for January 26 but was postponed due to the snowstorm.  Commission
members will be updated regarding the Governor's Highway Safety Program's
FY2000 Action Plan, which details highway safety programs and law enforcement
equipment projects funded for the current fiscal year.
    Also on the agenda is a presentation from Al Eisele, director of the state
Forensic Tests for Alcohol (FTA) branch of the Department of Health and Human
Services. FTA oversees the breath- and blood-alcohol testing programs related
to driving while impaired (DWI), including the mobile breath-alcohol testing
units better known as BATMobiles.  The Commission also will hear a report on
highway safety trends from Dr. Don Reinfurt, deputy director of the UNC
Highway Safety Research Center, and DOT Traffic Safety Engineer Tony Wyatt
will discuss issues concerning the safety of transporting 16-foot-wide mobile
homes on North Carolina roadways.
    In addition, GHSP staff will advise the Commission about the status of the
Governor's Highway Safety Initiative, including plans for upcoming "Click It
or Ticket" and "Booze It & Lose It" initiatives.  The Commission also will be
updated on plans for the statewide Young Adult Highway Safety Conference and
the second annual North Carolina Law Enforcement Summits, to be held in March
and April, respectively.
    The Governor's Highway Safety Commission is composed of 15 members
appointed by Gov. Jim Hunt.  The duties of the Commission include establishing
statewide highway safety goals, reviewing proposed highway safety legislation,
collecting information related to highway safety, surveying public opinion on
highway safety, establishing innovative highway safety programs, and advising
the Governor on ways to promote highway safety in North Carolina.
