Special Devices, Inc. Successfully Fires 'Smart' InitiatorMOORPARK, Calif., Feb. 4 -- Special Devices, Inc. (SDI) announced the successful firing of its electronic, "smart" initiator for automotive safety applications. The device, used in the inflation of automobile airbags, incorporates a complex ASIC to perform several functions normally carried out by a central firing unit. David Forman, Director of Research and Development at SDI commented, "This is a revolutionary new product. The "smart" initiator is interfaced to the automotive safety system using a computer network, in contrast to current devices that are directly connected." Several experts at major automobile companies believe that without network technology, the next generation of safety systems may not be possible due to the increase in connector and cable sizes. "This new technology is important to our customers and will help us maintain SDI's market leadership position," stated Thomas Cresante, CEO at SDI. Special Devices, Inc.
