--Feb. 3, 2000--TOPIC: The U.S. auto industry enjoyed a brisk 10 percent rise in sales of cars and light trucks last month, according to the Michigan research firm Morgan & Co., the A.P. recently reported. Over 1.2 million vehicles were sold in January, for a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.8 million light vehicles. Industry experts and economists had forecasted the pace would slow in January after last year's record-breaking sales of cars, pickups, vans and sport utility vehicles.
