Toyota Reports Best-Ever January SalesTORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported best-ever January sales of 128,123 vehicles, up 35.7 percent over the same period last year. "It wasn't supposed to be this good," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president. "Industry sales have tracked the steady rise in personal income and personal spending. It's been an enjoyable ride, but we have plans in place for a slower pace, if necessary." Both TMS sales divisions broke January sales records. The Toyota Division posted best-ever January sales of 114,866 units, up 38.3 percent, while the Lexus Division also enjoyed best-ever January sales of 13,257 vehicles, up 16.5 percent. Total Toyota Division passenger car sales were up 44.5 percent for a best-ever January. Passenger car sales were led by best-ever January sales of the Camry, which sold 40,285 units, up 34.0 percent. The all-new Avalon also scored best-ever January sales of 8,177, up 94.7 percent. Corolla sales were up 8.7 percent compared to January 1999 as were Celica sales, which reached 3,820. The ECHO, Toyota's all-new subcompact car, recorded its best month of sales since being introduced last October, with 4,068 units sold. Toyota Division light truck sales, up 28.1 percent to 39,881 units for a best-ever January, were led by the 4Runner which posted sales of 9,344, up 8.2 percent compared to the same period last year. Both the Sienna minivan and Land Cruiser recorded best-ever January sales of 7,527 and 1,790 units respectively, while the Tundra full-size pickup had a strong month, selling 6,900 trucks. The Lexus Division's record-breaking January sales were led by its popular RX 300 sport utility vehicle, which sold 6,398 units, up 61.2 percent over January 1999. LX 470 sales rose 29.2 percent for the month while the ES 300 sedan posted a 4.3 percent gain in January sales, with 3,185 cars sold. Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 60.7 percent of total January sales. There were 25 selling days in January 2000, equaling the number in January 1999.
