Mitsubishi Motors Reports Increased Sales for January 2000; Second Best January in Company's U.S. HistoryCYPRESS, Calif., Feb. 1 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. (MMSA) today reported a strong start for 2000, with January vehicle sales of 18,787 units, up 9.1% from January 1999. The increase, the second best January in MMSA history, was attributed to strong buyer demand for the Galant mid-size sedan, Eclipse sport coupe, and Montero Sport mid-size SUV. Some figures of note: -- MMSA reported sales of 6,184 units, an increase of 40.4% above January 1999 for its award-winning Galant -- The new-for-2000 Eclipse sports coupe continues to attract new customers, with sales of 3,668 units, a 36.2% increase from the previous year -- The restyled Montero Sport sold 4,224 units, a 20.5% rise over January 1999 "Continuing our success from the tremendous momentum of a record 1999, Mitsubishi Motors is off to a good start for 2000," said Pierre Gagnon, MMSA executive vice president and chief operating officer. "We're pleased that consumer attraction to our three core products -- Galant, Eclipse and Montero Sport -- continues to be strong. The only thing holding us back from even stronger sales is tight inventory." Gagnon expects that the March launch of the 2001 Eclipse Spyder convertible and all-new 2001 Montero luxury sport utility vehicle will continue to bring in more showroom traffic for Mitsubishi Motors products. Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of vehicles, including coupes, convertibles, sedans and sport utility vehicles.
