GM Starts 2000 with Gains in Trucks, Cars, & Retail Sales
* Total Vehicle Sales climb 11.5%
* Truck Sales Up 18%
* Car Sales Rise 6%
* Retail Sales up 20%
DETROIT, Feb. 1 -- General Motors today reported
strong sales for the month of January. Total vehicle sales rose 11.5% to
348,137 units. Truck sales finished the month 18% higher at 170,621 units and
car sales of 177,516 units were up 6%. GM posted a healthy January retail
sales performance, finishing off the month with a 20% total increase. Trucks,
which accounted for 56% of retail sales, rose 25%, while retail car sales
tallied 14% higher.
GM's performance in several key industry segments also showed strong sales
momentum. The Utility segment posted the highest total sales increase of 27%
followed by Luxury sales, up 16.8%. Pickups rose 19%, while the Midsize Car
segment -- the industry's largest and GM's strongest -- climbed 16%.
"The economy remains strong and vehicle affordability favors the
consumer," said Roy S. Roberts, Group Vice President of GM North America
Vehicle, Sales, Service and Marketing. "GM has kicked off the year with
strong sales. We sold hard and we sold profitably in 1999, and the outlook
for 2000 is healthy."
GM's new product launches and truck sales, in particular, continue at a
brisk pace and 2000 should be another banner year for GM and the industry.
GM's truck position will continue to grow based upon consumer preference for
Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups and the all-new full-size
utilities -- the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.
