Record Chrysler Sales Lead to Second-Best January For DaimlerChrysler Corporation
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 1 -- Record sales of Chrysler brand
vehicles led DaimlerChrysler Corporation to its second-best January sales
level. Total January sales for Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep(R) and Dodge vehicles
were 184,317, down six percent compared to the record January 1999 level of
195,807. The Chrysler brand sales mark of 27,923 vehicles, a 21 percent
increase over last year, broke the previous January sales record of 25,146 set
in 1985.
"This was an excellent month for the Chrysler brand, and further
solidifies a resurgence of our luxury nameplate," said Theodor R. Cunningham,
Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "While overall sales were down
a bit from the record January 1999 levels, we broke seven sales records
enroute to the second-best January in history. This is a trend that continues
the momentum we established last year."
In addition to the Chrysler brand record, six other sales records were
established in January. Individual January records include:
* Chrysler brand minivans (Town & Country and Voyager) set several sales
records, including the best month ever for Chrysler minivans, surpassing the
previous record set in December 1999. Combined sales of the two models were
up 87 percent versus last year, with 9,297 units. Separately, the Town &
Country minivan had a record January with 6,881 units, up 38 percent versus
last year. The previous January record was 5,559 units set in 1998. January
was the third consecutive monthly record for Town & Country.
* Chrysler Sebring Convertible -- up 14 percent versus last year with
5,123 units. The previous record was 4,477 units in 1999.
* Dodge Intrepid -- up eight percent versus last year with 13,490 units.
The previous record was 12,674 in 1997.
* Dodge Dakota -- up eight percent versus last year with 11,829 units.
The previous record was 10,914 in 1999. This was the second consecutive
monthly record for Dakota.
* Plymouth Prowler -- up 31 percent versus last year with 180 units. The
previous record was 137 in 1999. This was the fifth consecutive monthly
record for Prowler.
Truck and sport utility vehicle (SUVs) sales both achieved the second-best
January in the company's history. Total truck sales were 131,311, down from
1999's record of 139,631. Total SUV sales were 47,908, down from 1999's
record 55,171. Total car sales were 53,006, down from last year's level of
56,176.
There were a number of highlights to the company's January minivan sales
level of 40,167, up two percent over last year. In addition to the record
Chrysler Town & Country sales, Dodge Caravan sales were up nine percent over
last year, with 24,665 units. Sales of the Chrysler Voyager were 2,416,
reflecting continued growth for this new nameplate.
"Our minivans are selling well and we are determined to keep our
leadership position. In trucks, we are benefiting from the success of the
all-new Dodge Dakota Quad Cab," said Cunningham. "Add to that the Chrysler PT
Cruiser hitting the streets in just a few months, and we are confident that
this sales pace will accelerate. We are looking forward to bringing even more
customers into our dealers' showrooms with an unprecedented number of new
product launches in 2000."
