Volkswagen Sales Up 48 Percent - Best January Since 1979
    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 1 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
today reported its best January sales in 21 years.
    In January, Volkswagen sold 23,850 new cars in the U.S., which represents
a 47.7 percent increase over last year's mark of 16,149.
    January represented another strong increase in Jetta sales.  For the
month, Volkswagen sold 9,984 Jettas, an increase of 67.5 percent over 1999's
figure of 5,962 and the best January results in the history of the model.
    With sales of 5,391, Volkswagen's mid-size Passat also enjoyed its best
January sales ever.  This year's mark compares to 1999's 3,195, an increase of
68.7 percent.
    New Beetle sales for January were 6,192, an increase of 15.4 percent over
last year's total of 5,367.
    Last month, Volkswagen reported its best annual sales results in the U.S.
in a quarter century, with 315,563 sold in 1999 -- a result that maintains
Volkswagen's status as the country's number-one selling European importer.
