Career Choices for Service Technicians Featured at SAE 2000 World Congress
WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 1 -- "Life After Wrenching" is the
provocative title of a special panel that will examine different career paths
for automotive service technicians as part of the Service Technicians Society
"Conference Within a Conference" at SAE 2000 World Congress March 6-9 in Cobo
Center, Detroit, Michigan.
The panel is one of several activities on the schedule to inform service
technicians how they can take advantage of the new technology now under
development in the auto industry.
Web-based training is the first item on the agenda as SAE 2000 World
Congress opens on Monday, March 6. At 1 p.m., Steve D. Burgett of the Melior
Institute will introduce pilot research and progress of delivering technical
automotive training via the worldwide web. He will conduct a demonstration of
how to use video clips, video mail and other Internet resources to create a
virtual learning environment for the service technician.
As vehicles get "smarter," the impact on repair and maintenance of
intelligent vehicle systems is becoming an increasingly critical issue. Mark
E. Hall of Vetronix Corporation will conduct a session on Tuesday, March 7 to
help service technicians learn about the Intelligent Data Bus and allow them
to provide feedback to SAE on serviceability issues.
The career advancement session will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday,
March 7 and will include seven panelists from the automotive industry who will
discuss their own career choices, their strategies and suggestions for
furthering a career in the automotive service industry.
STS, an affiliate of SAE, is the mobility service industry's premier
professional organization for service technicians, offering technical
information and training on a wide variety of automotive topics.
