AutoNation, Inc. Names Jonathan P. Ferrando Senior Vice President And General Counsel
    FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Jan. 27 -- AutoNation, Inc.
today announced the appointment of Jonathan P. Ferrando, 34, as Senior Vice
President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary, reporting to Michael J.
Jackson, Chief Executive Officer.
    In his new position, Mr. Ferrando will be responsible for the overall
direction of AutoNation's legal affairs, including corporate governance
issues, securities matters, mergers and acquisitions, and the complete range
of corporate legal activities.  Mr. Ferrando most recently served as Senior
Vice President and General Counsel of AutoNation's Automotive Retail Group,
where he was responsible for the legal affairs of the division.  He joined
AutoNation in 1996.
    Prior to joining AutoNation, Mr. Ferrando was a corporate and securities
attorney in private practice with the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate,
Meagher & Flom in Chicago, Illinois.  His practice there concentrated in the
areas of mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance.  A native of
Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mr. Ferrando graduated from the University of Michigan in
1988 with a B.A. in Economics and from Harvard Law School in 1991.
    Mr. Ferrando succeeds James O. Cole, who has announced that he is
resigning in order to pursue business interests.
    Mr. Jackson said, "We are fortunate to have someone of Jon's caliber to
assume the role of General Counsel.  Jon has handled more than 100 mergers,
acquisitions and joint ventures, including many here at AutoNation.  He also
brings an excellent background in corporate law and securities law.  I look
forward to benefiting from his experience and counsel."
