Sandia Awards IMPCO Contract for Fuel Cell Storage TechnologyIRVINE, Calif., Jan. 27 -- IMPCO Technologies, Inc. announced today that its Advanced Technology Center in Irvine, California, has been awarded a Sandia National Laboratories (Livermore, CA) contract to supply hydrogen fuel cell on-board vehicle storage cylinders for test and evaluation. Under the terms of the contract, IMPCO will ship hydrogen cylinders for Sandia's program scheduled to commence next month. IMPCO's technology would enable fuel cell vehicles to travel further (extending vehicle range) between refueling stops, essentially providing for energy density approaching that of liquid hydrogen storage without the safety or cost disadvantages. Syed Hussain, Vice President and General Manager of IMPCO's Technology and Automotive OEM Division said: "This is an important step towards commercialization of fuel cell vehicles as it bridges a missing link in technology. There are a number of prominent companies all working on the development of a fuel cell engine but those vehicles need fuel tanks and fuel metering equipment. This is where IMPCO can play a major role. To have a Department of Energy national laboratory such as Sandia participating in technology development and evolution is clear recognition that we are moving closer to a hydrogen-based economy. IMPCO's patented technologies will be a driving force toward the use of Hydrogen as a fuel, including Fuel Cell applications."
