Delphi Announces ISO 14001 Registration of 3 Additional Plants
21 January 2000
Delphi Announces ISO 14001 Registration of 3 Additional PlantsTROY, Mich., Jan. 21 -- Delphi Automotive Systems is making steady progress toward having its worldwide facilities registered to the International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 environmental specification, with another three facilities now certified to the standard. The recently registered facilities are: Delphi Delco Electronics Systems, Reynosa, Mexico; and Delphi Delco, Liverpool, England; Delphi Delco, Shanghai, China. Additionally, six sites have been recommended for registration. They include four Delphi Packard Electric Systems facilities in Warren, Ohio (North River Road, the Warren Distribution Center, Dana Street and Plant Number 8), Delphi Harrison Thermal Systems, Douai, France (a joint venture facility with Calsonic Corporation), and the Delphi Automotive Systems Milwaukee Operations facility in Oak Creek, Wisconsin (a joint Delphi Delco Electronics Systems and Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems facility). Delphi has 29 plants out of its 168 facilities now ISO 14001 registered or recommended for registration. Registered facilities have completed all audits and have been issued a certificate. Facilities that are recommended for registration have put all necessary systems in place to support the ISO standard and are awaiting final review by the registrar. Delphi's goal is to have all facilities registered by the end of 2001. Facilities are audited twice a year to maintain their ISO 14001 registered status. Marty Cristo from Delphi's facilities services group and the manager charged with implementation of the company's environmental management systems, said Delphi's steady progress is an indication of a systems approach to protecting the environment. "It's important that everyone in our operations knows what their individual roles and responsibilities are as far as the environment is concerned," Cristo said. "By implementing the ISO 14001 standard, we are really saying it's not just the environmental engineer that is responsible. Everyone has a part in maintaining the ISO 14001 standard." The ISO 14001 standard establishes a system that is enduring. "ISO 14001 certified facilities have implemented a system that becomes integrated into each employee's job," Cristo said. "This is extremely important for Delphi since our operations give employees the flexibility to move to new jobs within the organization as they become available. The system will allow the newly transferred employees to quickly know the environmental responsibilities of their new positions." The system also integrates business practices, aligning business goals with environmental goals. "For example, we look at reducing scrap from an environmental perspective," Cristo said. "Reducing scrap product means you don't have to use as much raw materials and energy in your operation and that helps reduce the impact on the environment. At the same time, reducing scrap is something the manufacturing manager wants to do; it's non-productive output you don't get paid for. Our environmental management system will provide the framework that encourages these improvements." John Jaffurs, director, Delphi environmental services, said the integration of the ISO 14001 standard into company operations will have long-term benefits. "We want to formally integrate our environmental management into the goals of the business," Jaffurs said. "Establishing an environmental management system is a very effective way of designing our processes and utilizing materials in a more effective manner and in doing so, we can help prevent pollution before it starts." Cristo said plant managers are now able to use the ISO 14001 standard to make better business decisions. "It provides a system that allows plants to take into consideration certain environmental costs they might not have considered up front when looking at their production programs." In acknowledging that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly interested in having their suppliers become ISO 14001 certified, Cristo said the standard is, in effect, an emerging industry requirement, which helps Delphi. "We welcome the requirement from OEMs because we believe having an effective environmental management system gives us a competitive advantage."
