Record Sales Boost Mack's U.S. Market Share for Seventh Consecutive Year
LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa.--Jan. 20, 2000--Mack Trucks, Inc. today announced that it closed 1999 with a record 34,264 U.S. Class 8 retail sales, which represented 13.1 percent of the heavy truck market. This was an increase from 12.8 percent in 1998, making Mack the only U.S. Class 8 truck manufacturer to consistently increase its market share over the last seven years.
The U.S. truck market had its second straight record year in 1999, with the total retail volume increasing 25 percent, to 262,316 vehicles. Mack's sales growth outpaced the industry's -- retailing 7,463 more vehicles than in 1998, the company increased its volume by nearly 28 percent. Mack also strengthened its position as the industry's number three brand.
"Mack has begun its Centennial year with tremendous momentum," said President and CEO Michel Gigou. "With a steady growth trend and a record level of investment in our future, we're strongly positioned to begin our second century of industry leadership."
Mack's Canadian subsidiary, Mack Canada, Inc., experienced a slight drop in sales, to 2,858 units. This represented a 9.3 percent share of the Canadian retail market, compared to 10 percent in 1998.
Mack's major overseas subsidiary, Mack Trucks Australia Pty. Ltd., increased sales by 6 percent to 746 units, which represented a 12.1 percent share of the Australian heavy-duty truck market. This compared to 11.7 percent in 1998, and was buoyed by the introduction of five new truck models during the year.
Year-end figures for industry exports are not yet available. However, in an export market that dropped more than 50 percent from 1998, Mack maintained its solid number two position with 1,363 sales. As of October, Mack sales represented 22.5 percent of the total North American export market.
