Ovonic Battery Achieves ISO 9002 Quality CertificationTROY, Mich., Jan. 14 -- Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. ("ECD") announced today that its subsidiary, Ovonic Battery Company, Inc. ("Ovonic Battery"), achieved ISO 9002 certification for its electrode manufacturing facilities. The quality management system that received the ISO 9002 certification consists of the electrode manufacturing plants and the associated departments of engineering, quality, finance, marketing, human resources and purchasing. Ovonic Battery is registered under the SIC Code 3641 with the scope being the manufacture of NiMH batteries, electrodes and materials. Mr. Ovshinsky, president and CEO of ECD and CEO of Ovonic Battery, congratulated Ovonic Battery on its ISO certification, noting, "This is a significant achievement by the Ovonic Battery team that will assure customers that they consistently can expect to receive quality products." ISO 9000 is a series of standards on quality management systems developed by the International Standard Organization (ISO) and recognized worldwide. The intent of the standards is to improve the quality of the products or services provided by an organization based on how the company is managed and operated. The requirements specified are aimed primarily at achieving customer satisfaction by preventing nonconformities at all stages -- from design through servicing. ISO 9002 is a Quality Systems Model for quality assurance in manufacturing, distribution and installation. Quality Management Systems are a requirement imposed not only by government contracts, but also by the demands of the commercial marketplace. Suppliers to the auto industry are required to be ISO 9000 certified. Compliance with ISO 9000 provides confidence to a customer, and the company's own management, that expected quality is being achieved. Ovonic Battery was registered on December 27, 1999 by NSF-International Strategic Registration, Ltd. (NSF-ISR). NSF-ISR is accredited as an ISO 9000 registrar through a joint program operated by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) and by the Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA), the Dutch council for accreditation. ECD is a leader in the synthesis of new materials and the development of advanced production technology and innovative products. It has pioneered and developed enabling technologies leading to new products and production processes based on amorphous, disordered and related materials, with an emphasis on alternative energy and advanced information technologies. ECD's web site address is http://www.ovonic.com . Ovonic Battery was founded by ECD in 1982 to develop and commercialize its basic proprietary NiMH rechargeable battery technology. All significant battery manufacturers are licensees of Ovonic Battery's NiMH battery technology. In 1994, Ovonic Battery and General Motors Corporation formed a manufacturing joint venture, GM Ovonic, L.L.C., to commercialize NiMH batteries for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles for sale to the automotive industry. The Ovonic NiMH battery for electric vehicles is the first and only battery to exceed 200 miles on a single charge during official tests conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy.
