Jaguar Sets All-Time Sales Record for 1999
DETROIT, Jan. 11 -- Jaguar roared to a new sales record in
1999 -- posting the best-ever sales results in the company's seventy-seven
year history. Boosted by the international success of the new S-TYPE sports
sedan, the Coventry based luxury and performance car manufacturer sold a total
of 75,312 cars during the year -- fifty percent higher than last year's
record breaking sales. Exports too, were at an all-time high with eight out
of every ten cars produced in the Company's plants in Coventry and Birmingham,
England being sold in overseas markets.
Announcing the second consecutive year of record-breaking sales at the
Detroit International Auto Show today, Jaguar's Managing Director, Jonathan
Browning said: "These are outstanding sales and export figures. They quite
clearly demonstrate Jaguar's rapidly-growing presence in the international
luxury and high performance car market and that the S-TYPE has already become
a major commercial success with premium car buyers around the world."
The new S-TYPE sports sedan was launched during the second quarter of 1999
and by year end a total of 38,801 cars had been sold in world markets.
Seventy-seven percent of S-TYPEs (29,695 cars) were exported.
Jaguar's biggest export market -- and the company's biggest market
worldwide -- is the United States, where a record-breaking 35,039 cars were
sold in 1999. December 1999 was also a record breaking month for Jaguar in
the United States with 4946 cars being retailed to American customers -- the
highest number of Jaguars ever sold in a single month in one market in the
company's history.
Worldwide, Jaguar reported its best ever December sales of 7848 cars -- an
increase of 78 percent over December 1998.
An all-time record 17,015 cars were exported to Continental Europe -- a
62 percent increase over 1998. Virtually every market in Europe reported
all-time record sales during the year. Sales in Germany increased to 6090
cars -- up from 4059 sales in 1998. Sales in Spain, Sweden, Greece and the
East European markets more than doubled during the year. Sales to Russia
increased by over 300 percent. All-time record sales were also reported in
the United Kingdom, Jaguar's home market, where the company retailed a total
of 15,483 cars during 1999 -- a 33 percent increase over 1998.
In the world's three biggest premium car markets -- the U.S., Germany and
the U.K. -- Jaguar recorded the fastest sales growth of any manufacturer.
Major sales gains were also reported from Jaguar's markets outside Europe
and North America. Sales in Middle East markets increased by 63 percent with
950 cars sold during the year. Sales in Japan increased by eighteen percent
to 2367 cars and elsewhere in the Pacific rim and South American regions sales
increased by 64 percent to 2505 cars.
"It has been an outstanding year for Jaguar," said Jonathan Browning.
"The commitment of all our employees have helped us achieve these record
breaking sales in an increasingly competitive global market. The launch of
the S-TYPE was a major success and, coupled with our international reputation
for quality, reliability and customer satisfaction, this clearly signposts
Jaguar's direction and intentions for the future."
