UAW Joins Dodge as Partner on Evernham Motorsports Team
DETROIT, Jan. 11 -- The United Auto Workers union (UAW) will
join Dodge and its dealers as a partner on the Evernham Motorsports NASCAR
Winston Cup racing team, beginning with the 2001 season. The UAW will be a
major sponsor on Evernham's two Dodge Intrepid R/T race cars when Dodge makes
its much anticipated return to the most popular racing series in America.
The announcement was made today at the 2000 North American International
Auto Show, where Dodge unveiled the Dodge Intrepid R/T it will race in the
NASCAR Winston Cup series.
"With the UAW joining us on the Evernham Motorsports team, we have
effectively completed the circle of partnership," said Jim Julow, Vice
President, Dodge Division. "Together, we have the brand that develops the
product, the people who sell it and the people who build it. We are still
more than 400 days away from our debut at the 2001 Daytona 500, but we already
have a heck of a team in place."
In one of the most unique sponsorship agreements in sports, Dodge and its
over 2,900 dealers nationwide will team up as primary sponsors on the two-car
team of Ray Evernham, former crew chief for three-time NASCAR Winston Cup
Champion Jeff Gordon. Both cars will carry the signature Dodge logo on flame
red Dodge Intrepid R/T Winston Cup cars.
As an associate sponsor, the United Auto Workers union will be represented
on both cars, all uniforms, vehicle transporters and any other equipment
associated with the Evernham Motorsports team.
"The DaimlerChrysler UAW employees are happy to be partners with Dodge and
the Dodge dealers in their endeavor to bring the Dodge racing spirit back to
NASCAR Winston Cup," said Nate Gooden, Vice President and Director, UAW
DaimlerChrysler Department.
This announcement marks the latest step in Dodge's countdown to the 2001
Daytona 500. On October 7, 1999 Dodge started the clock on its 500-day march
to the biggest racing event in America, where, after a 15-year layoff one of
the most storied brands in racing will return to NASCAR Winston Cup racing.
