SAE SoCal - January through June 2000 Calendar of Events

6 January 2000

To:	SAE Board Members, Section Members, Company Reps, Intersociety
Partners, Faculty Advisors, Student Officers, and Media Contacts
cc:	Others with an interest in SAE activities

SAE SoCal has a busy schedule planned for the new year. As always, events
are subject to change, but for those who'd like to mark up their new Y2K
calendars, here is what we have tentatively planned for January through
June. We've also included a number of great non-SAE events that should also
be of interest.

Please forward this note to others with an interest in mobility technology.
If your company does not make extensive use of e-mail, please print and post
to your local bulletin board. Thank you.

Special Exhibits @ the Petersen

FINAL DAYS OF THIS EXHIBIT -- Surf's Up! The Great American Woody --
through January 17th - Synonymous with California, Woodys have come to
symbolize the carefree lifestyle associated with coastal living. Their
affordability as used cars made them attractive to youthful drivers who
lacked a great deal of discretionary income, but wanted a distinctive
utility vehicle capable of carrying long surfboards and other cumbersome
gear. During the 1970s, enthusiastic aficionados elevated the woody from
utilitarian "used car" status to revered historical artifact worthy of
meticulous restoration and careful preservation. Today, Woodies are
appreciated as much for their unique appearance and careful construction as
they are for the fond memories they evoke.

Spindizzies: High Speed on a Small Scale - Over 100 Cars From the World's
Most Comprehensive Collection of Spindizzies will be on exhibition through
February 27th - Spindizzies are masterpieces of engineering on a miniature
scale. They are models of automobiles-some real, some fanciful-that are
powered by their own tiny (but loud) piston engines. Built to run on
specially-built circular tracks at breakneck speeds, spindizzies reached the
height of their popularity between 1938 and 1950 when hundreds of spectators
would turn out to watch the noisy little cars race. Today, they are eagerly
sought after by collectors for their racy looks, superb craftsmanship, and
intricate engineering. Of the hundreds of spindizzy collectors in the
United States and abroad, few are more committed to the hobby than Eric
Zausner author of the book, Spindizzies: Gas-Powered Model Racers. His
collection-arguably the world's most comprehensive-will be featured in the
Petersen exhibition. Spindizzies: High Speed on a Small Scale will take a
fond look back at the history of these wonderful little cars and explore how
they have captured the attention of so many enthusiasts.

Arte y Estilo: The Lowriding Tradition - One of the Most Comprehensive
Museum Exhibitions Ever Assembled on Lowriders
Coming to the Petersen Museum February 5-May 28, 2000 - Arte y Estilo: The
Lowriding Tradition, one of the most comprehensive museum exhibitions ever
assembled on lowriders, will premiere February 5 through May 28, 2000 at the
Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The exhibition will showcase a
range of historic and innovative customized lowriders, from the classic
1930-1940 models known as "bombs," to the popular Chevy Impalas of the late
50s and 60s. Also included are examples of lowrider trucks and bicycles<an
offshoot of the lowrider aesthetic taken up by youths.

Where: Petersen Automotive Museum, 6060 Wilshire Blvd. (at Fairfax), Los
Angeles, CA 90036
