Volkswagen Also Way up in '99

Volkswagen December Results Best Year Since 1974
    AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- For the month, Volkswagen sold 23,903 new cars in the 
U.S., which represents a 33.2 percent increase over last year's December mark 
of 17,950.

    For 1999, the German automaker sold 315,563 new cars in the U.S., up
43.6 percent from the same period in 1998 when sales were 219,679.

    Volkswagen sold 130,054 Jettas in 1999 versus 1998's mark of 89,311, an
increase of 45.6 percent.

    The Golf model recorded 18,990 sales last year versus 1998's mark of
18,282, an increase of 3.9 percent.

    For the year, Volkswagen sold 83,434 New Beetles.  This is a 49.4 percent
increase over last year's sales of 55,842.

    Volkswagen sold 68,151 Passats in 1999 versus last year's figure of
39,272, an increase of 73.5 percent.
