Advance Auto Parts CEO Garnett Smith to Retire

    ROANOKE, Va.--Dec. 22, 1999--Advance Stores Company, Incorporated announced today that Chief Executive Officer Garnett Smith, 60, will retire from his full-time position at the company in April 2000.
    Mr. Smith, who has decided to spend more time with his wife who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness, will become Vice Chairman of the Board of Advance. The company said a successor will be named shortly so an effective transition can be made. Mr. Smith has been CEO of the company since 1998, and previously was president since 1985. Mr. Smith started with the company as a salesman over 40 years ago.
    Advance Stores Company, Incorporated, based in Roanoke, Va., is a retailer of auto parts and accessories through more than 1,600 stores in 37 states and Puerto Rico, primarily operating under the Advance Auto Parts banner.
