Delphi Invests in Anderson, Ind., Facility

Delphi Invests in Anderson, Ind., Facility
FLINT, Mich., Dec. 14 -- Delphi Automotive Systems
is investing nearly $2.7 million in its Anderson, Ind.,
manufacturing facility, according to Donald L. Runkle, president of Delphi
Energy & Engine Management Systems.
$1.7 million is for the installation of two lean assembly cells in
Anderson's ignition plant. The assembly cells will replace two existing
production lines and will be used for the manufacture of a direct-ignition
system. Delphi will also invest $946,000 to restore approximately 280,000
square feet of the ignition plant roof. Both investments will be made this
year.
The direct-ignition system is an electronic engine-sensing and spark-
control system that determines spark plug timing. The system connects to the
engine electronically, not mechanically; therefore, it has no moving parts and
does not require timing adjustment. A typical package includes one two-tower
inductive coil for each cylinder pair and ignition module, and a crankshaft
and/or camshaft position sensor. The direct-ignition system is compatible
with today's sophisticated engine management systems as well as simpler
systems.
"We're excited about the new assembly cells we will be implementing in our
plant here in Anderson," said William P. Elia, ignition plant manager. "This
investment in our direct-ignition system assembly process will help us improve
our competitiveness."
Capital expenditures announced during the first six months of 1999 for
Delphi's Dynamics & Propulsion Sector worldwide were in excess of $165
million. During 1998, Delphi invested approximately $900 million in capital
expenditures for all of Delphi's locations in the United States.
Delphi Automotive Systems , with headquarters in Troy, Mich.,
USA, is a world leader in automotive component and systems technology.
