Georgia Odometer Readings Added to Carfax.com Database; New Records Added to National Database to Help Fight Odometer Fraud
    FAIRFAX, Va., Dec. 8 -- Carfax.com, the nation's leading
provider of vehicle history information, today announced the addition of
millions of odometer readings from Georgia to its national database of over
980 million vehicle records. Smart consumers throughout the Southeast
recognize the savings and other benefits of buying a used car instead of a new
one, but used cars are sometimes hiding costly problems. Odometer fraud,
rolling back or otherwise altering the mileage that appears on a vehicle's
odometer, is a growing problem for used car buyers. According to the National
Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), odometer fraud costs
consumers more than $4 billion each year.
Used car buyer Chris Taylor used Carfax.com to detect an odometer rollback
on a 1988 Mazda. "I was about to purchase a 1988 Mazda RX7 and the owner said
the mileage of 44,000 was correct," says Chris. "However, the Carfax.com
report revealed that the car had once been registered with 131,000 miles --
this information saved me from losing thousands."
Just what do these records mean to the consumer? In addition to the other
valuable information in a Carfax report, such as flood damage, salvage history
and lemons, consumers can see odometer readings for thousands of used cars and
trucks. The Carfax.com database automatically alerts consumers to
discrepancies in a car's odometer history. Now used car buyers can either
trust the seller who says the vehicle is cherry, or uncover any hidden
problems with these new records. Interested consumers can see a sample report
at http://www.Carfax.com.
Consumers should ask their used car dealer to provide a detailed vehicle
history. Participating Carfax dealers can be located at http://www.Carfax.com. If
not available through a dealer, consumers can visit Carfax.com to purchase 60
days of unlimited access to the company's database for $19.95. Individuals
who purchase and receive Carfax reports that confirm a clean title history
automatically receive the Clean Title History Guarantee worth 10% of the value
of their vehicle up to $1,000. Used car dealers interested in signing up for
the Carfax service should call 1-800-444-0145.
