Lexus Reaches its One-Millionth Milestone; Vehicle Donated to the Petersen Automotive Museum
TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 2 -- After 10 years of selling Lexus
cars and trucks in the United States, the company sold its one-millionth unit.
To commemorate this milestone, the luxury vehicle manufacturer has donated the
One-Millionth Lexus built for the U.S. market to the Petersen Automotive
Museum in Los Angeles to support its many programs and exhibits.
After being displayed in the museum's lobby for six months, the
One-Millionth Lexus, a Millennium Silver RX 300, will be sold at Christie's
International Motor Cars annual auction with the proceeds to benefit the
museum to help fund educational programs and future exhibits. The RX 300 will
be featured in Christie's catalogue, which will be distributed to its more
than 4,000 clients in the United States and worldwide.
"This has been a year for celebration at Lexus," said Bryan Bergsteinsson,
Lexus group vice president and general manager. "Milestones include our 10th
Anniversary, record sales, outstanding performance in quality and customer
satisfaction rankings, and now we've sold our one-millionth Lexus. It doesn't
get much better than this."
The Petersen Automotive Museum, located in the heart of Los Angeles, is
one of the world's largest and most innovative automotive museums. Three
floors of automotive history take visitors through time and trace the
development of the automobile and its influence on the culture of Los Angeles.
The $40 million museum, which is owned and operated by the Natural History
Museum Foundation of Los Angeles County, opened to the public in 1994.
Christie's, the world-renowned auction house, will include the
One-Millionth Lexus in its second annual motor cars auction on June 17, 2000
at the Petersen Automotive Museum. In addition to autos, Christie's offers
sales in more than 80 categories, including fine art, wine, stamps and even
sunken cargo. Christie's operates from 119 offices in 41 countries.
"We congratulate Lexus on selling its one-millionth vehicle in the United
States," said Ken Gross, director of the Petersen Museum. "We're appreciative
of Lexus' support and are proud to display the One-Millionth Lexus. Lexus and
the RX 300 have certainly influenced the auto industry and culture in Los
Angeles and nationwide." The RX 300 will join more than 175 other vehicles on
display at the museum.
