Help for HAVEN: Lear Corporation Doubles Donation
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Dec. 2 -- Lear Corporation
today announced that the company is doubling its support of HAVEN with a
$20,000 donation to help the Oakland County-based shelter for battered women
and their children re-establish its residential program after a fire
devastated HAVEN's Pontiac shelter on November 14.
HAVEN, which stands for Help Against Violent Encounters, is the county's
only shelter and is continuing to assist victims of domestic abuse, sexual
assault and child abuse by offering referrals to shelters in other counties.
0fficials of HAVEN also continue to operate a 24-hour crisis hotline
(248-334-1274) and offer counseling and other services.
"Lear is pleased to double our 1998 donation of $10,000 in response to
HAVEN's critical need to launch interim operations during the six months it
will take to rebuild the Pontiac shelter," said Leslie A. Touma, Lear Vice
President - Corporate Relations. "HAVEN performs a vital role in helping
women involved in abusive relationships but without a shelter and necessary
supplies, the organization is unable to provide optimum assistance -- which
could have life and death ramifications."
Touma recently received an invitation to join the HAVEN Board of
Directors.
"I'm pleased to represent a company that recognizes and responds to the
needs of our community and supports worthwhile organizations like HAVEN that
make such efficient use of donated funds, equipment and supplies," Touma said.
"I am honored to be affiliated with HAVEN which has an outstanding track
record in helping our community. This continues my involvement in domestic
abuse issues and allows me to help HAVEN's outreach to other organizations
like the Women's Economic Club to mobilize involvement in and support of
HAVEN."
Touma and incoming HAVEN Board Chairwoman Terry Merritt, Vice President of
Human Resources for Walbridge Aldinger, both hold leadership positions in the
Women's Economic Club (WEC) and are working to encourage the membership of WEC
and other organizations to assist HAVEN.
Donations can be sent to HAVEN, 75 West Huron Street, Pontiac, MI 48342 or
call 248-334-2343, ext. 34, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. All donations
are tax deductible.
