Volkswagen Sales Up 70.6 Percent - Best November Since 1973 - Best Jetta and Passat November EverAUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 1 -- With its new 2000 models now on sale at dealerships across the country, Volkswagen of America, Inc. continued to record strong double-digit growth, reporting its best November sales results in more than a quarter century. For the month, Volkswagen sold 24,469 new cars in the U.S., which represents a 70.6 percent increase over last year's November mark of 14,345. Not since 1973 has Volkswagen enjoyed November sales of this magnitude. So far in 1999, Volkswagen is well ahead of last year's brisk pace. Year- to-date, the German automaker has sold 291,660 new cars in the U.S., up 44.6 percent from the same period in 1998 when sales were 201,729. November represented another record-breaking month for Volkswagen's best- selling Jetta model. Volkswagen sold 9,757 new Jettas in November versus 1998's mark of 3,593, an increase of 171.6 percent. It was the best November sales figure in the history of the model, which was originally introduced in the U.S. in 1980. The popular New Beetle continued to sell briskly in November with sales of 6,922, a 12 percent increase over last year's mark of 6,180. November also marked more sales records for Volkswagen's award-winning Passat sedan and wagon. The Passat enjoyed its best November sales month ever with 5,654 sold in November, versus last year's figure of 3,194, an increase of 77 percent.
