Orbital Appoints China Representative

1 December 1999

Orbital Appoints China Representative
PERTH, Australia, Dec. 1 -- Orbital Engine Corporation Ltd
has appointed Australian business executive Alan Reid as its
representative in China.
Perth-born Mr. Reid has lived and worked in China and Hong Kong since
1985. He has significant, internationally recognized experience in conducting
business in the region, and has an impeccable range of political and
commercial contacts.
Mr. Reid said China held enormous opportunities for Orbital. "Air
pollution has become a major issue in China's big cities, and one of the main
causes is the exhaust emissions from the rapidly growing motorcycle fleet.
Last year China produced more than half of the world's motorcycles for
domestic and export customers. With plans to introduce strict emissions
requirements next year, Chinese manufacturers will need to boost the
efficiency of their motorcycles. Orbital's technology, which is designed to
make gasoline engines cleaner and more efficient, could make a big
contribution."
Orbital is currently working with a number of manufacturers in China, most
notably China Hainan Sundiro Motorcycle Co Ltd. Sundiro is one of China's
largest and fastest growing motorcycle manufacturers, producing 682,000
motorcycles in 1998.
It has been working with Orbital for more than two years, and has
announced its intention to apply Orbital's technology to its two-stroke
engines. It is now conducting production validation programs and plans to
commence volume production in the year 2000.
Mr. Reid is currently Managing Director of the Beijing-based consulting
firm Reid & Associates. Between 1992 and 1996, a period of growing ties
between Australia and China, he was Senior Trade Commissioner at the
Australian Embassy in Beijing. For five years prior to that, he was Managing
Director of a Hong Kong-based consultancy which focused on business
opportunities in China and Hong Kong.
He has also worked for Foster's Brewing Group in China and has practiced
as a solicitor in Australia. He is a law graduate of the University of
Western Australia.
