Unique Mobility, Inc. Receives Patent for Electric Motor with Internal BrakeGOLDEN, Colo., Dec. 1 -- Unique Mobility Inc. (Amex: UQM) announced today that it received United States Patent Number (5982063) for its "Electric Motor with Internal Brake." This is an additional patent specific to brake packaging in gearless-brushless direct drive motors produced by Unique Mobility. An additional patent on the gearless-brushless direct drive motor design is pending. The co-inventors of the patented design are Jon Lutz, Unique's Manager of Motor Engineering and Kevin Lewis, Senior Engineer. Patent coverage includes a brake mechanism partially embedded within the hollow rotor of a gearless-brushless direct drive motor that has no touching parts, no gears, no grease and requires no ongoing maintenance. The holding brake, a requirement for electrically powered wheelchairs, is packaged inside the motor which minimizes the length of the motor and the wheelbase of the chair thereby allowing d spaces and through narrow doorways. Many other industrial or motion control applications requiring a gearless integrated motor and brake can benefit from this design, since overall size and part count are reduced and only one housing is required, an important advantage in critical environments. William G. Rankin, Unique's President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "This patent gives us additional coverage on our breakthrough power wheelchair motor and is the sixth U.S. Patent to be granted to Unique Mobility. These motors achieve high torque without a gear reduction and have inherent packaging, noise, maintenance, control and efficiency advantages. These advantages allow our production wheelchair motors to be used in a wide range of applications." Unique Mobility, Inc. is a leading developer and manufacturer of power dense, high efficiency motors, gear assemblies and electronic assemblies for the automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, medical and industrial markets. The Company's headquarters and engineering and product development center are located in Golden, Colorado.
