Motorola Receives Prestigious "Leading Edge" Award From Volkswagen for Excellent Technology; DigitalDNA Technology Wins First VW Semiconductor Supplier Award

AUSTIN, Texas--Nov. 30, 1999--Motorola was recognized as the first semiconductor supplier to receive the prestigious Volkswagen Corporate Supplier Award - "The Leading Edge 1998" - for providing Volkswagen with excellent microcontroller technology and high service standards at a ceremony this week in Berlin.
The award marks recognition by a leading automobile manufacturer of Motorola's DigitalDNA(TM) technology. DigitalDNA is the brand created for the company's smart, embedded technology.
The "Leading Edge" award is presented annually by Volkswagen (VW) to recognize suppliers who strive for the best and enable VW to achieve global success and growth. Motorola's uncompromising high standards were awarded for flexibility, service, quality, competitiveness and innovation.
"This award demonstrates VW's confidence in Motorola's DigitalDNA microcontroller technology and our ability to develop innovative solutions jointly with our customers," said Hector Ruiz, president, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (SPS). "Motorola collaborated with Volkswagen to quickly design a smart solution that met new market parameters and competitive conditions.
"Because Motorola was integrated early in the product development stage, our DigitalDNA technology was able to reduce cycle time, and therefore enhance Volkswagen's global competitiveness."
Motorola's smart embedded technology is the catalyst for networks that enable smart vehicles to link to people and information. Because of this leadership in networking, Motorola is uniquely positioned at the heart of the vehicle networks that enable smart products. Motorola has been the leading supplier of semiconductors for the automotive industry since the infusion of semiconductors into the automobile.
Global demand for automotive electronics that rely on semiconductors, like those from Motorola, will continue to grow, reaching a projected 61 percent growth to $13.3B by 2002, according to projections from Dataquest.
And to ensure a creative advantage for its customers, Motorola plans to continue to create advanced semi-custom solutions built upon these market-leading smart, embedded technologies.
Reflecting the increasing importance of electronics, Volkswagen made its first ever award to a semiconductor and software manufacturer. "Today, our volume vehicles have an average of eleven control units, of which five are networked," said Jorg Blecker, head of VW's group procurement for electrical and electronic systems.
"We estimate that this will rise to 40-60 networked control units per vehicle in the future."
"We take pride in collaborating with the world's leading companies to create the world's smartest automotive solutions and will continue to work hard for our customers," stated Scott Anderson, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola's Transportation Systems Group (TSG).
"We are dedicated to creating value-added relationships with suppliers, like Volkswagen, to understand their unique needs and anticipate the desires of their customers, to provide the industry's most innovative and compelling solutions."
According to the 1998 Dataquest Microcontroller Market Share Report, Motorola was identified as the number one supplier of microcontrollers in four key categories. These DigitalDNA smart solutions were recognized within the automotive field by VW as highly innovative and excellent technology.
Although Motorola microcontroller technology is key to the automotive market, these high-performance, cost effective smart solutions offer a broad range of solutions to customers in the consumer, computing, networking, and industrial arenas.
