Wheeler, Chief Operating Officer of Speedway Motorsports, Calls New NASCAR TV Package a 'Tremendous Milestone'CONCORD, N.C., Nov. 11 -- Here is a statement regarding the new NASCAR television package from H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and chief operating officer of Speedway Motorsports and president of Lowe's Motor Speedway: "This is a tremendous milestone, maybe the biggest since the founding of NASCAR more than 50 years ago. This puts us into the true mainstream of national sports. We will be one of the big three now. "FOX and NBC bring a new creativity to NASCAR racing. David Hill (FOX President) is one of the most creative people, not only in sports, but television entertainment. Dick Ebersol's (NBC) track record speaks for itself. He is the founder of 'Saturday Night Live' and has brought a real innovative approach to NBC Sports. In addition to this creativity, I think both FOX and NBC will bring an intensity level to our coverage that will match such sports as the NFL and NBA. There is a tremendous amount of high drama in NASCAR racing which will be even more evident by this increase in network media intensity. "However, in the afterglow of all this, we have to remember the tremendous job that CBS, TNN, ABC and ESPN have done in getting us this far. We will miss them and their contributions." Because complete details of this comprehensive package have not been fully disclosed, Mr. Wheeler will make no further comment at this time.
