ADVISORY/New York To Toughen Auto Emission Standards
--Nov. 10, 1999--TOPIC: Following California's lead to enact stricter vehicle emission standards, New York State recently announced it would take significant measures to reduce auto pollution. Starting with the 2004 model year, all cars, minivans and sport utility vehicles sold in the state must cut their emissions to half of present levels by 2010. Massachusetts is reportedly considering similar legislation for SUVs. Auto industry experts say it is difficult to manufacture different autos for different states, and add that pollutant levels are more likely to be reduced through the use of cleaner fuel.
