GM Gives Nod to 'Cold' Welding Technology from Pulsar
YAVNE, Israel, Nov. 10 -- General Motors executives conducted
investigations of a new welding technology that uses magnetic pulses to create
a Cold Weld(TM). The GM contingent visited the facility of Pulsar Ltd. in
Israel to get a first hand look at the systems and capabilities that Pulsar
developed. Pulsar demonstrated welding of tubes of aluminum to steel --
two materials that were previously considered impossible to weld together.
GM has stated that this creates entire new possibilities in car
manufacturing and have already entered into an agreement with Pulsar on
initial parts. It is expected that Pulsar technology could be integrated into
vehicles as early as 2003 year models.
The Pulsar technology enables using lighter and cheaper material in car
frame construction. Another application of Pulsar's Magnetic Pulse technology
is in the area of forming. Pulsar's systems can assist and in some cases
replace stamping operations. The systems will replace expensive dies and
multi-million dollar presses and bring the parts to their final dimension with
no springback or need for stress relieving. This makes creation and assembly
of parts faster, better and cheaper.
"This is a revolution for the automotive industry," stated Pulsar CEO, Mr.
Oren Gafri, "as it creates higher quality and tremendous cost savings
throughout the auto-making process." Mr. Gafri explained that the savings
start by cutting down the size of a plant and the amount of machinery needed
in an assembly plant by 50%. Additional savings are generated in the 0%
defects generated, the high level of quality and the faster processing speed.
More inexpensive materials can also be used, so that overall savings to the
manufacturer and to the customer will be substantial.
Another benefit from all this activity is that significantly lighter
vehicles will be manufactured with much better fuel efficiencies. For the
popular Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and light trucks, this will be an
excellent solution to reducing emissions.
Pulsar details many more applications and benefits at its newly revamped
website at http://www.pulsar.co.il . Pulsar also shows innovation in the industrial
Internet arena by providing customers an online interactive form for
requesting samples and system quotations.
