    CANTON, Ohio, Nov. 8 -- At a regular meeting of The Timken
Company's board of directors on November 5, two new officers were
elected to serve as secretary and treasurer.  Scott A. Scherff was elected an
officer and named corporate secretary.  Sallie Ballantine Bailey was elected
an officer and named director - finance and treasurer.

    The responsibilities of secretary and treasurer were held formerly by
Larry R. Brown, senior vice president and general counsel, and Gene E. Little,
senior vice president - finance, respectively.  "This reassignment of
responsibilities reflects the increasing scope of our financial and legal work
as a result of the continued growth of our company," said W. R. Timken, Jr.,
chairman and chief executive officer.
    Mr. Scherff's responsibilities as corporate secretary will include
corporate governance, Securities and Exchange Commission matters, and
continued direction of legal services.
    "Scott's knowledge of our company and experience in legal matters has
served our company well," said Mr. Brown.  "This added role as secretary is a
natural extension of the critical work he has been doing through the years."
    Ms. Bailey's responsibilities as treasurer will include cash and asset
management, monitoring working capital and business financial performance,
merger and acquisition financing needs, and banking relationships.
    "We are fortunate to have on our team a person of Sallie's caliber to fill
this key position that has been growing significantly in scope and
importance," said Mr. Little.
    Ms. Bailey joined the company in 1995 as director - finance.  Prior to
joining Timken, she served in various positions at Tenneco, Inc., the last
assignment being as assistant treasurer.  She began her career in Chicago as
an auditor at Deloite and Touche.
    A graduate of Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, Ms. Bailey earned a
bachelor's degree in economics and German from Wellesley College in Wellesley,
Massachusetts, and a master's degree in business administration from The
University of Chicago.
    Mr. Scherff joined the company in 1979 as an attorney.  He has held
several subsequent positions, including assistant superintendent - labor
relations, senior corporate attorney, and director - legal services and
assistant secretary, his most recent position.
    A graduate of Mansfield High School in Mansfield, Ohio, Mr. Scherff earned
a bachelor's degree in economics and a juris doctorate in law, both from The
Ohio State University.
