IMPCO Technologies Announces Opening of Major Manufacturing Facility in Mexico

CERRITOS, Calif.--Nov. 3, 1999--IMPCO Technologies Inc. today announced it will open a 33,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Guaymas, Mexico on Nov. 9, 1999.
The company said the new plant will assemble CNG fuel systems initially for General Motors' Chevrolet Cavalier and, early in 2000, light duty pickup trucks. The facility will begin ramping up to higher volume productions over the next few months.
The company previously used its Irvine, Calif., facility for the production of the Chevrolet Cavalier alternative fuel vehicle. With the opening of the new facility, IMPCO expects to experience additional cost savings, as well as enhance production capabilities for the alternative fuel vehicle market. IMPCO will continue to utilize its Irvine facility for research and development and fuel tank manufacturing.
Robert Stemmler, president and chief executive officer, said "We announced earlier this year that Mexico is an important market for IMPCO and this step, while designed initially for the production of product for the United States, will allow us to move with greater facility into the conversion market in Mexico.
"To this end, we are working closely with the Mexican government and we are committed to continue our development of distribution, service infrastructure, technology and training in that country. We also believe the expansion into Mexico is a stepping stone to other potential lucrative markets in South America," Stemmler said.
IMPCO Technologies is a market leader in the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) marketplace and aftermarket for gaseous fuel management systems and components that allow internal combustion engines to operate on clean gaseous fuels such as propane and natural gas. IMPCO provides conversion systems for motor vehicles, forklifts, other material handling equipment, and small portable to large stationary engines. With headquarters in Cerritos, the company has additional facilities in the United States, Australia, Japan, and Mexico. It operates in the Netherlands, France, Germany and the United Kingdom as IMPCO-BERU Technologies, B.V.
